The legend of Mataaho

Have you ever wondered why Auckland was built on a mountain and why Auckland was built right on top of the ring of fire? Well let me tell you about a story about Mataaho.

Once upon a time there lived a man and his kind loving wife. His wife always kept him warm, comfy and gave him something to eat everyday when he returned back home. They lived on top of Mt Eden in a fine looking house. But one day the man did not return back home and his wife was very angry. The next day he still did not return and his wife was furious. She was so furious she packed her bags and left him all by himself .When the man returned he found that his wife was no longer there. He got cold, lonely and he was hungry. Soon Mahuika (goddess of fire) heard that the man was lonely. So she decided to help him by lighting fires around him the man was happy and he slept in his warm crater.
