A long time ago there was a man named Mataaho he lived on top of a mountain called Maungawhau. He lived in Mt Eden, Auckland, New Zealand. He lived in a crator of Maungawhau.

Mataaho’s wife was kind. She cooked, cleaned and kept him warm. She looked after him really well. One night Mataaho did not come home and that night she was furious!!! She never wanted to see him again. She would never get over the fact that he did not come home.

The next night he came home hoping for a home cooked meal but to his surprise there was absolutely nothing. He was so depressed that his lovely wife had left him. He was so sorry that he had stayed out the night before and he wished that he had told his wife that he was staying out and he would not be home.

He wished that he had food and a warm loving wife to comfort him. Mahuika heard about his problems so she decided to help him. She light fires on all of the nine mountains around him to keep him warm. As for the food that’s another story.
