Meeting the locals
“Yuck”! “It stinks round here, keep up I heard someone shout. “Bob down”, the voice repeated. As I was stroddding behind Piumila I spun around to take a glance at who was screaming. It was Mrs Kung. Well if you didn’t know this already we were going past the office to the stinky foul smelling worm farm. It was a beautiful day on September 14th and we had arrived at the worm farm with Room 11 and Eilleen.
“Don’t, Citrus fruits” those were a few of the words I heard Eilleen say. She was saying not to include citrus fruits into the worm farm and when you put a banana peel in you should break it up. Then she dug her hands into the worm farm (note: she had gloves on) and pulled out a chunk of mud with slimy tiger worms in it. I was watching them slithering through the moist smooth mud. To me they looked like long spaghetti pieces.
Then I saw Eilleen picking something off the ground. A snow white pot with……… worm tea in it. Ewww! The worm tea/pee was swaying from one side to the other as if it was going to splat me in the face. Eilleen explained that if the worm tea had a strong smell and if it was left in one place for too long it wouldn’t be suitable to use in your gardens. Then she let all of us have a sniff of it. I took a short vast sniff and started feeling sick.
I had really enjoyed learning about tiger worms and meeting our locals. The main purpose of having this tour was to understand what conservation week and sustainability meant. The next time I go to visit our locals I would want to have a closer look at them and maybe even create my own worm farm. Adding some waste to the worm farm would help our plants by worms producing more worm pee. Overall it was an interesting and exciting tour.
