The story of Mataahao

This is a story of a man called Mataahao. He lived with his wife in Auckland, on top of Mt Eden (Maungawhau).
The crater was his bed. His wife was a fair and loving wife.
She cooked him meals and kept him warm. However, Mataahao was a bad tempered man. He did not appreciate the good view from the mountain, or the good meals, or his wife’s company.
One day he had gone out. When he had come back, it was very late.
There was no one home. His wife has had enough of him. He had deeply regretted it. As he thought about all he had lost, he began to weep and pray. Mahuika the fire goddess felt sorry him. So she lit fires around him, to keep him warm and so he could cook his own meals.
Until this very day you can see the evidence of these fires as the volcanoes surrounding Auckland.
