Once upon a time there lived a man named Mataaho and his wife. They lived at the top of Mt Eden. The wife cooked and kept him warm but one day he left home and didn’t come home. The wife was furious so she packed up her things and left. The next day Mataaho returned home and when he got there his wife was gone. He was cold and hungry. Mahuika the goddess of fire heard Mataaho’s cry and so she lit nine fires around him to keep him warm. Once she lit the fires Mataaho went back into bed and slept. This is why you can now see nine mountains surrounding Mt Eden.
