Have you ever wondered why lots of volcanos surround Maungwhau? Well I know a little story to tell you why.
A long time ago in Auckland there lived a man called Mataaho. He had a very nice, caring wife who gave him food and kept him warm everyday and they lived on a volcano called Maungwhau.
One day Mataaho went out and didn’t return home, angrily his wife waited for him but he still didn’t return home so she packed her bags and left him. The next day Mataaho returned home expecting a good meal cooked for him but he didn’t see this wife cooking and he didn’t see this wife at all. He looked everywhere around this house until he thought his wife left him because he didn’t return home. So sadly he sat in a bed hungry and cold
When Mahuika the goodness of fire heard what happened to Mataaho she went to visit him right away. She felt sorry for Mataaho so she made volcanos around Maungwhau to keep him warm after that Mataaho slept through the night.
