Have you ever wondered why Auckland is surrounded by volcanoes?

150,000 to 200,000 years ago there was a man called Mataaho who lived on top of Maungawhau. He was very lonely until he got married. She was a lovely woman. She kept Mataaho warm and cooked him lots of food.

One day Mataaho did not come back. His wife was furious. She waited until she got even more furious than before. She packed her belongings and left.

The next night Mataaho came back. He looked everywhere for his wife but she wasn’t there. He was really hungry and very cold. Mahuika the goddess of fire heard everything. She decided that she should help him. So she lit fires around him to keep him warm. Right now they are mountains. (Volcanoes)

The next day he was so warm that he couldn’t get out of his bed. That is why Auckland is surrounded by volcanoes.
