Have you ever wondered why there are so many volcanoes in Auckland? If you did here is your answer……………………
A very long, long time ago there lived a Mataaho. He lived on top of Maungwhau. The creator was his bed. He had a wife who cooked him a good meal and made him feel warm. But one day Mataaho didn’t return. His wife got mad and packed her things and ran away. When Mataaho returned he thought there would be cooked meal ready but there was nothing left except his bed. No cooked meal and no wife. He felt cold and lonely. When Mahuika the god of fire heard this news she felt sorry for him. So she decided to make him feel warm by putting fire around him. So she did. And from that day Mataaho didn’t feel cold and lonely. In this story the fire is the volcanoes. So if you get a chance to go to Maungwhau Mt Eden, look around and you will see the volcanoes surrounding you.
